The Lineage of Iyengar Yoga: A Legacy of Excellence
Our centre’s work is guided by the timeless wisdom of Sage Patanjali and the teachings of Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar, Geeta S. Iyengar, and Prashant S. Iyengar. For us, yoga is a lifelong journey of learning. Every year, we travel to the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI) in Pune to study at the source.
Ancient Roots: The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali
Patanjali, the ancient Indian sage, is celebrated as the father of yoga philosophy. His Yoga Sutras, a collection of 196 aphorisms, lay the foundation for the practice and discipline of yoga, offering a path toward self-mastery and inner peace through the Eight Limbs of Yoga.
B.K.S. Iyengar – Life & Legacy
This timeless wisdom inspired B.K.S. Iyengar, who`s dedication and innovative approach brought Patanjali’s teachings to life. His wisdom, shared with both humility and wit, continues to resonate within our global community of practitioners. Light on Yoga, often lovingly referred to as “the bible of yoga,” has been a guiding resource for generations since its first publication in 1966.
Geeta Iyengar
We hold a special place in our hearts for the teachings of SriGeeta S. Iyengar, daughter of Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar. As a pioneering teacher, she changed the way the world understands yoga for women. Through her life’s work and her acclaimed book, Yoga: A Gem for Women, she showed us how yoga can truly support women through every stage of life, including menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause. Though she passed away in 2018, her wisdom continues to guide our practice every day.
Sri Prashant S. Iyengar
Sri Prashant S. Iyengar, son of Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar, is a renowned yoga scholar, philosopher, and teacher. He is known for his profound understanding of yoga’s philosophical and spiritual dimensions. PrashantJi is gifted musician and author. Some of his key works are Pranayama: A Classical and Traditional Approach, Organology and Sensology in Yogashastra, Alpha and Omega of Trikonasana, Chittavijñana of Yogasanas, Discourses on Yog, and A Manual of Humanics, among others.
We love sharing the perspective of Prashant Ji, who views yoga as an “Adhyatmik Academy”, a place for spiritual study. In our sessions, we don’t just “do” poses; we follow his lead in exploring and see yoga as a path of self-study and transformation.
After Guruji’s passing in 2014 at the age of 95, his teachings continue to live on. Under the guidance of Sri Prashant Iyengar, Sunita Ji, and Abhijata Iyengar, the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Institute (RIMYI) carries his legacy forward worldwide.
